In 2009, approximately 1,479,350 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed. The American Cancer Society (ACS) aims to educate people about cancer symptoms, treatment, and prevention; investigate conditions under which cancer was found; compile cancer statistics; and provide support for those diagnosed.
This year, Washington Financial helped raise funds for the ACS by sponsoring an employee team at the Relay for Life. The Relay for Life is the largest community fundraiser in the world and directly benefits the ACS. During the Relay, teams must have one member on the track for 24 hours. In addition to gathering sponsorships, Washington Financial's team held a Chinese Basket Auction at the event. Many employees participated by gathering donations, walking on the track, and donating baskets for the Auction.
The funds generated at the Relay for Life will be put towards cancer research, medical supplies, support for families coping with loss, and college scholarships for survivors. Since its inception in 1913, the Society has made remarkable strides in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient quality of life. As a result, overall cancer mortality has steadily declined since the early 1990s, and the five-year survival rate is now 66%, up from 50% in the 1970s. Today, more than ever, their goal of eliminating cancer as a major public health threat is within reach.
